Over the last few years, the world, our places of work and life circumstances have forced many of us - our significant others and children included - to stay at home. When COVID initially hit, many of us had no idea our homes were not set up for the new “we’re ALWAYS home” life.
For instance, most of us relied solely on Eskom for power, and all household appliances were electric. Fast forward to 2022, and what used to be weird for most, i.e. working from home, has become the norm. We’re consuming more energy in the home because we spend more time there. We all started feeling the pinch on our pockets and resorted to switching our geysers on at specific times for an hour.
To add to the already confining realities, Eskom announced power hikes in April this year and promised a roll-out of more increases.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has authorised the national power utility Eskom to increase its tariff by an average of 9.61% for the 2022/23 financial year. The tariff increase includes 3.49% for the 2022/23 year and legacy decisions from previous years, which brings it to 9.61%.
Let’s not fool ourselves; this is obviously going to affect already cash-strapped consumers and the economy at large negatively.
We strongly recommend you continue reading and take our advice seriously. It will save you a lot of money. It’s about getting rid of your electric geyser, which eats up 40% of your electricity and is exceptionally inefficient. We wonder why it still exists.
Electric geysers are actually very wasteful appliances. They store and preheat water before use. And because they don’t know when you’re going to need hot water, they basically keep the water constantly hot. This is the equivalent of keeping your kettle perpetually boiling for 24 hours a day, just so you can have hot water for your 3 cups of coffee throughout the day. Not very smart. While it is convenient, it is very wasteful and unnecessarily expensive.
Gas water geysers provide On-demand heating! Use It Right Now, and you will get hot water. They don’t store the hot water to pre-heat. Rather, they instantaneously heat your water as it passes through the gas appliance. It is powered by gas that heats the pipes as the water passes through it. So when you open your tap, the geyser heats the water as it passes through.
It's very economical, for two reasons: Firstly, you aren’t wasting energy by constantly heating the water. From a cost perspective, it will cost you less to run and operate a gas geyser (including gas) than paying for electricity. And the most important benefit is that, with gas geysers, you only need to set it to your desired temperature.
Because electric gas geysers store water at a maximum of 65 degrees, cold water flows into the geyser once you open the tap, lowering the overall temperature. Meaning that hot water is hot for a limited time. That’s why, especially if one or two people use the shower before you, you have a lukewarm shower at best.
But a gas geyser can maintain the desired temperature at all times. It does not store water, so you can never finish the hot water, as it's always instantly heating the water to the desired temperature. Saving you heating costs.
I think what's exciting about this is that you can approach this with fresh eyes. It’s about making tradeoffs, in this case about cost vs benefit (saving and comfort), and considering the human impact the decisions will have on our habits. Replacing your electric geyser for a gas geyser is not only one of the wisest ways you can save money and energy in your home and enjoy the comfort of a continuous flow of hot water, but you're also contributing to sustaining your planet.
